Abstract

This study examines the evolving role of libraries as key enablers of sustainable development in the digital era, focusing on their alignment with India’s National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Traditionally seen as book repositories, libraries are now emerging as vibrant hubs of digital learning, innovation, and community empowerment. NEP 2020 positions libraries as central to educational reform—envisioning dynamic school libraries, strengthened academic and public libraries, and expanded digital platforms such as the National Digital Library of India to promote resource sharing and lifelong learning. Parallel, the SDGs emphasize inclusive and equitable education (SDG 4), reduced inequalities, and digital empowerment—objectives that libraries are uniquely equipped to address. Integrating emerging technologies like artificial intelligence (AI), virtual reality (VR), block chain, and multilingual platforms can redefine library services, enhance access, and ensure cultural relevance. The study highlights the role of Library and Information Science (LIS) education in equipping professionals to lead this transformation and proposes a digital framework for libraries to advance NEP 2020 and sustainable development, particularly in underserved communities.
