Abstract

Eri weaving, a distinctive textile tradition of Assam, embodies ecological ethics, cultural identity, and sustainable livelihoods. Known as “Ahimsa silk”, it is unique for its non-violent mode of production, where the silkworm is not harmed. This eco-friendly characteristic makes Eri especially relevant within the global sustainable fashion discourse. However, existing scholarship has largely focused on its heritage and craftsmanship, leaving limited exploration of its entrepreneurial potential. This gap highlights the need to link indigenous weaving practices with green entrepreneurship and sustainable development. The present study investigates Eri weaving as a driver of sustainable entrepreneurship in Assam. It examines how eco-branding, product diversification, and innovative value chains can reposition traditional textiles in global markets. Special attention is given to women-led weaving clusters as agents of social innovation and resilience, aligning with inclusive green growth initiatives.

What is new in this research is the formulation of a green entrepreneurship model rooted in indigenous textile practices, connecting traditional weaving with modern sustainable business strategies. Anticipated outcomes include policy recommendations for eco-textile promotion, value-chain development strategies for Eri-based enterprises, and insights into aligning Assam’s weaving heritage with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs). By bridging tradition and innovation, this study positions Assam’s Eri textiles as a global exemplar of eco-friendly entrepreneurship.
