Abstract

Sustainable librarianship represents a transformative approach in which the Librarians actively advance green practices and environmental stewardship within Library environments. The Green Library movement emphasizes Librarians’ responsibility to provide accurate sustainability information, raise community awareness, and support broader environmental goals aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This evolving role encompasses adopting sustainable operations such as energy-efficient technologies, waste reduction, and renewable energy integration, alongside promoting environmental awareness and education through collection development, community engagement, and collaboration with sustainability initiatives. Librarians are increasingly positioned as catalysts for fostering sustainability both within physical library spaces—through practices like green buildings and resource management—and in their broader communities by serving as sustainability information hubs and role models. Perceptions among Librarians increasingly recognize their role in embedding sustainability in library policies, services, and education to ensure long-term ecological and social impact This research paper explores how Librarians implement eco-friendly strategies, contribute to sustainable development goals, and reimagine Libraries as vital centres for environmental stewardship and green innovation.
