Abstract

Street vendors represent a large informal occupational group in urban India and are continuously exposed to traffic-related air pollution, significantly increasing their risk of respiratory morbidity. Conventional spirometry, although considered the gold standard for lung function assessment, is limited in community settings due to its dependence on infrastructure and trained personnel. Recent advancements in micro–nano spirometry and portable air quality sensors offer a novel, field-based approach for real-time exposure–response assessment. This integrative review aims to synthesize evidence on the integration of micro–nano spirometry and air quality sensors in predicting respiratory morbidity among street vendors and to explore its implications for community health nursing practice. The review followed PRISMA 2020 guidelines and included studies published between 2010 and 2025 retrieved from PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, IEEE Xplore, and Google Scholar. A total of 46 studies met the inclusion criteria. Findings indicate that integrated sensor-based approaches improve early detection of subclinical lung function decline and enhance prediction of respiratory morbidity. These technologies were found to be feasible for community-based screening and effective when implemented through nurse-led initiatives. The review concludes that the integration of micro–nano spirometry and air quality sensors represents a scalable and innovative strategy for respiratory health surveillance among pollution-exposed populations. Community health nurses play a pivotal role in implementing these technologies for early detection, prevention, and occupational health advocacy.
