From Ambient Intelligence to Deep Learning a Bibliometric Analysis of Smart Home Technologies for Elderly Care

- Abstract
Aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), age-friendly smart homes provide a vital technological framework for advancing healthy and sustainable aging. Despite increasing academic focus, a comprehensive informatics-based synthesis of this field is still restricted. This study conducts a systematic bibliometric analysis to evaluate scientific outputs and identify emerging research themes in age-friendly smart home technologies. CiteSpace and additional visualization tools were used to assess 700 pertinent publications (2006–2025) that were found in the Web of Science Core Collection using a keyword-driven search strategy. The results indicate a steady growth in research output, with China, the UK, and the USA identified as the most influential contributors. Sensors and IEEE Access are the main publication venues, while the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique is the dominant institution, according to key findings. Bibliometric mapping reveals that “Internet of Things” and “Activity Recognition” constitute the core technological foundations. Notably, a significant transition toward advanced artificial intelligence is observed, characterized by recent citation bursts in “Machine Learning” and “Deep Learning.” These trends suggest a paradigm shift from basic ambient assisted living toward sophisticated, user-centric AI applications. The study concludes that future research will increasingly emphasize the convergence of AI and smart living informatics, necessitating enhanced international collaboration to bridge the gap between technological innovation and sustainable elderly care.
