Conference: Proceedings of the International Moving Image Cultures Conference (IMOVICCON 2023)
Date: 31 October-1 November 2023
Location: Tangerang, Indonesia (Hybrid)

The 3rd International Moving Image Cultures Conference (IMOVICCON 2023) aims to celebrate moving images by looking at their past, present, and future. It’s necessary to examine the past, the present, and the future of moving images since the past can be used as a reflection site. The present tells how far we’ve come, and it is even more interesting to see what the future holds for moving image culture. Ever since the invention of the Phenakistoscope until the development of the Metaverse, moving image culture continued to evolve and became a huge inspiration for various research and publications. Its transdisciplinary nature also makes moving images approachable by every methodology available, making it possible to be explored and researched by multiple scientific disciplines.

These proceedings comprise papers presented at the International Moving Image Conference (IMOVICCON), held in Tangerang, Indonesia, during October 31–November 1, 2023. ‘The Past, The Present, and The Future Of Moving Image Cultures’ became the theme of the conference. The conference serves as an academic space for students, lecturers, researchers, practitioners, and enthusiasts of moving images to exchange and share academic experiences, and to disseminate their latest research on all aspects of moving images. Participants can discuss any aspect of, but not limited to, the past, present, and future of moving images. This exciting event is made possible through a long-time collaboration between the Universitas Pelita Harapan (UPH) in Indonesia and the Universitas Multimedia Nusantara in Indonesia.

The three keynote speakers were Ekky Imanjaya, PhD (BINUS University, Indonesia), Dr. Max Schleser (Swinburne University of Technology, Australia), and Dr. Sarah Haynes (Liverpool Screen School, Liverpool John Moores University, UK). This year the conference is fortunate enough to have Prof. Manneke Budiman, a distinguished professor in Literature and Culture Studies from Universitas Indonesia, to be special guest presenter.

IMOVICCON 2023 adopts a hybrid conference format, incorporating both virtual and on-site participation at the Universitas Multimedia Nusantara in Tangerang, Indonesia. In the spirit of internalization, the hybrid approach was implemented. This form enables participants from various geographic locations to engage actively in the conference. This year’s conference has managed to obtain papers from Italy, UK, India, Australia, and of course Indonesia. This conference is not merely an assembly of individuals; it is a convergence of ideas, perspectives, and innovations that shape the landscape of moving image cultures. Hopefully, this conference can inspire new ideas, foster collaborations, and contribute to the ongoing dialogue that shapes the future of moving image cultures.
