Abstract

In this study, the ABAQUS software was adopted to simulate and analyze the dynamic response and damage modes of bridge piers under the action of underwater explosion (UNDEX) loading A reasonable numerical model of bridge piers was established, and simulation tests were conducted under different impact conditions to reproduce the process of UNDEX. The results show that factors such as the water depth of piers and impact intensity have significant effects on their dynamic response and damage modes. With the increase of water depth, the effective stress, strain and compression damage of bridge piers all show an increasing trend. The increase of impact intensity will lead to the increase of pier deformation, while the rate and degree of the increase may vary with the distance from the explosion source. The influence of water depth on pier damage presents a dual characteristic: on the one hand, the increase of water pressure exerts additional prestress on piers, which will aggravate their damage; on the other hand, water can dissipate part of the energy during the propagation of explosion shock waves, thus providing a certain degree of protection for piers. This complex interaction results in the nonlinear variation of pier damage under different water depths and explosive charges.
