Abstract

This paper summarizes and reviews the relevant literature on the causal relationship between social capital and health in western countries and China. The endogeneity of social capital poses challenges to identify the causal relationship. The empirical evidence so far remained mixed due to various measurement of social capital, research objectives and identification methodology. This paper concludes that the relationship between social capital and health should be taken as one of the key directions for China's health policy research.
