Proceedings of the Universitas Indonesia International Psychology Symposium for Undergraduate Research (UIPSUR 2017)
The second decade of this new millennial of human history offers an array of opportunities and challenges about human behavior. We have seen the emergence of digital technology, which has changed the daily experience in many aspects of our daily lives, from how we get connected to our family, friends, and colleagues, to how we get information, purchase and use consumer goods, to how we engage in our professional lives. At the same time, we also witness the persisting social inequalities and intergroup frictions, as well as community displacement due to natural disaster, an uncertain economy, or political crises, creating deepening fissures among different parts of our society. All those are a call for scholars to pour in their thoughts and work to face the challenges that this post-millennial era has brought. br>
It is a pleasure of ours to host the second iteration of Universitas Indonesia International Psychology Symposium for Undergraduate Research (UIPSUR 2017). Designed as an event for Psychology undergraduate students to show their research-oriented projects, this year’s symposium received 137 proposals. Ninety five papers from over 20 universities across Indonesia, Malaysia, and Australia were accepted and presented at the symposium on September 16, 2017. This proceeding includes 54 selected papers of the aforementioned 95 papers, representing six research fields: urban and cross-cultural psychology, human mental health and functioning, the disadvantaged and vulnerable society, cognition and learning, social behavior and community empowerment, and collaboration and cooperation in the organization. The selected undergraduate papers brought up topics that are pertinent to the affordances and challenges that the society currently encounters, such as the possible implications of the use of social media and digital technology, the empowerment of underserved communities, and the Millennials in the workplace. The papers originated from various kinds of an undergraduate research project, such as final term papers, research assistantship projects, and bachelor’s theses. br>
The editors would like to thank Universitas Indonesia Vice Rector Prof. Dr. rer nat Rosari Saleh, the Dean of the Faculty of Psychology Dr. Tjut Rifameutia Umar Ali, the Vice Deans Prof. Sri Hartati R. Suradijono, Ph.D. and Corina D. S. Riantoputra, Ph.D., and Universitas Indonesia Directorate of Research Product and Innovation Management for their support from the beginning of the preparation of the symposium to the finishing of this proceeding. We would also like to thank Dr. Lucia M. Royanto and the symposium organizing committee for running a successful conference and for their assistance in gathering the papers in this proceeding. We also thank the reviewers of the papers for their time and effort to provide feedback and suggestions for the authors of the papers. br>
UIPSUR 2017 is created with the spirit to provide a forum for undergraduate students to showcase their projects beyond the end-of-semester class presentation. The symposium is also organized to facilitate the students to learn to deliver an effective presentation, as well as receiving comments, critiques, and suggestions from their colleagues and other scholars. At Universitas Indonesia, we believe that cultivating connection and interaction among young scholars is crucial to the development of students’ intellectual horizon and therefore should be embedded as part of undergraduate education. It is our hope that the conference and this proceeding would foster and reinforce more scholarly engagement and collaboration among students and faculty members. br>
