Abstract

This article aims to develop the environmental awareness measurement instruments through Education for Sustainable Development among secondary school student in Malaysia. Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) were used to test the validity and reliability of the instrument. A total of 1,180 Form 4 students were involved in this research. A stratified sampling technique was selected to determine the location of schools in urban and rural areas while the selection of respondents using a simple random sampling technique. Feedback was attained by using a questionnaire with a five-point Likert scale. Data were analysed descriptively for reliability (Cronbach’s alpha values) and Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) was done after the data were obtained for deleting unnecessary items. The overall data were analysed using Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) for items grouping. The results showed that there was a relationship between knowledge contruct with attitudes, practices, values, and behaviour. The reliability value obtained was more than 0.70. The study implies that the instrument produced could become an important tool in assessing environmental awareness through ESD practices among secondary school students in Malaysia.
