Abstract

Due to the unstructured and random arrangement of material, the ceramics industry faces efficiency challenges in its raw material storage warehouse. This problem is exacerbated by the placement of dead stock in strategic areas near the input/output (I/O) doors, resulting in long material handling distances and hindering the smooth operation of the production process. This study aims to redesign the warehouse layout to minimize space usage and increase efficiency by comparing dedicated and shared storage methods. The research method adopts a quantitative with analytical approach. The analysis begins with calculating space requirements, material movement frequency (throughput), and the throughput ratio per unit of space to determine the placement priority of each material. Layout efficiency is evaluated by measuring and comparing the total travel distance using the rectilinear distance method in the initial and proposed conditions. The analyzed material movement data are obtained from the company’s historical records. The results show that the proposed dedicated storage method can reduce travel distance achieving an efficiency of 27.02%. Meanwhile, the shared storage method demonstrated more optimal results, in reducing travel distance, achieving an efficiency of 35.27% compared to the initial conditions. Thus, it can be concluded that the shared storage method is superior in terms of travel distance efficiency.
