A Study of the Speech Act of Apologies by Chinese EFL Learners at Different Levels of Grammatical Proficiency

The purpose of this paper is to report on a study examining the developmental pragmatic competence of Chinese learner of English at different levels of grammatical proficiency. Bardovi-Harlig argues that although grammatical competence may not be a sufficient condition for pragmatic development, it may be a necessary condition . The study investigates the relationship between grammatical proficiency levels and the realization of apologies by Chinese learners in Chinese EFL context.The findings suggest that the students’ level of grammatical proficiency does have an influence on their performance of the speech act of apology.
