Abstract

This paper tries to find out the existing problems in College English reading textbooks generally used in China by analyzing the changes of College English textbooks in China. Through statement of the innate essence of language, principles of foreign language teaching and the changes of reading education in foreign countries, the paper suggests that famous literary works that represent western culture and history should be increased in College English reading textbooks whether in their original forms or in adapted versions. Meanwhile, practical writing should also be increased. Up to now attentions have not been paid to these problems and the improvement of College English textbooks will benefit college students’ English learning in China.
