Boosting Speaking Skills: Using Duolingo in English Language Instruction

Abstract

This study investigated how Duolingo can help students speak better. This study focused on 31 eighth-graders at SMP Negeri 35 Samarinda in 2022. The study used Classroom Action Research (CAR) and quantitative data analysis. The mean speaking score was calculated from pre- and post-test quantifiable data. This study found that pupils’ speaking skills improved from 44.67 to 47.41 in the first cycle. The second cycle's mean pre-test was 54.83 and post-test was 78.06. The top and bottom scorers also increased. In the first cycle, 65 students had the highest rank and 35 had the lowest, but in the second cycle, 95 had the highest and 50 had the lowest. Duolingo improved pupils’ speaking skills and fluency. Students became more engaged in English language study. Thus, Duolingo helped students better their fluency, pronouns, grammar, and comprehension.
