Abstract

This study explores the transformation of Vietnamese family culture from tradition to modernity through the framework of cultural acculturation theory. While traditional family values such as filial piety, hierarchy, and collectivism have long defined Vietnamese households, rapid modernization and globalization are reshaping these norms. Existing research often overlooks the nuanced processes of cultural adaptation within families navigating these changes. Using qualitative methods, including interviews with multi-generational family members across urban and rural areas, the study examines how Vietnamese families negotiate between preserving heritage and embracing modern practices. The analysis reveals a dynamic acculturation process influenced by external cultural exposure, internal movements from within, socio-economic shifts, and evolving gender roles. Findings highlight tensions and synergies in balancing respect for tradition with contemporary family expectations. The study offers recommendations for fostering a family culture that honors traditional values while supporting modernization, contributing to understanding cultural continuity and change in Vietnam’s social fabric.
