Abstract

This study investigates the Medicine Buddha Dharma Assembly held at Hue Nghiem Pagoda in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) as a model for Global Citizenship Education (GCED) based on Buddhist mindfulness. Utilizing qualitative research methods - combining practical observation with statistical data on the number of people taking refuge in the Triple Gem from 2013 to 2024, the results indicate that rituals such as chanting sutras, performing prostrations, and listening to Dharma talks contribute to nurturing mindfulness, compassion, and social responsibility. These virtues align with the GCED competency framework under Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4.7. The consistent annual growth in participant numbers demonstrates the social impact of this model. Particularly, its alignment with the Ho Chi Minh City Declaration (Vesak 2025) underscores the potential for integrating Buddhist moral education into lifelong learning systems. This represents a novel approach in the contemporary era of resurgence and integration, contributing to the formation of global citizens grounded in spirituality and indigenous culture.
