Abstract

The formation of Islam in the 7th century marked the beginning of a rising era for the Arabic-speaking communities. Among the unique cultural values that significantly contributed to shaping Arab identity is The Perfumed Garden (الروض العاطر في نزهة الخاطر) by Sheikh Nefzawi. Whereas the Kama Sutra of India focuses on the art of pleasure, and the Su Nu Jing (素女經) of China is associated with life nourishment theory, The Perfumed Garden frames sexuality within the context of humoral medicine, emphasizing the principles of moderation, harmony between physical and spiritual temperament, and the belief in God’s will in procreation. This study approaches Arab sexual culture through an analysis of folk medical knowledge embedded in The Perfumed Garden, reflecting how Arab society constructed norms for sexual and reproductive health care. The folk medicine knowledge is classified into two main domains, sexual health and reproductive health, and is systematized within the TAIM (Traditional Arabic and Islamic Medicine) framework. By approaching the work from an interdisciplinary perspective that combines cultural studies and medicine, this study contributes to identifying the knowledge that once played a crucial role in ensuring community health and maintaining social stability within Arabic-speaking societies.
