Can Digital Attendance Improve Student Attendance Rates?

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the impact of a digital attendance system on student attendance at SMPN 2 Satu Atap Sluke, Rembang Regency, Central Java, Indonesia. The research is conducted using the Research and Development (R&D) ADDIE model and utilizes the AppSheet platform, which integrates GPS technology and biometric verification. Data collection was conducted through interviews, questionnaires, observations, and document analysis, with 15 students as research subjects. Data analysis includes expert validity tests, product practicality tests, single-sample t-tests, simple linear regression tests, paired t-tests, and N-Gain tests. The results show that the AppSheet-based digital attendance system is valid (98%) and efficient (92.31%), and is effective in improving student attendance rates, as evidenced by the increase in the N-Gain score of the majority of students (60%) to the high category. The paired t-test confirms the superiority of digital attendance compared to manual attendance. Practically, this application has been proven to improve student attendance rates. The novelty of this study lies in the use of the AppSheet application, combined with GPS and biometric verification, which has never been done before in a rural school context for discipline management.
