Abstract

Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) is an important approach in responding to global challenges such as climate change, social inequality, and environmental degradation. This study aims to develop a contextual and practical ESD training curriculum design for junior high school (SMP) teachers. The research method employs a qualitative descriptive approach through a literature review of the ESD teacher competency framework and validation via Focus Group Discussions (FGD) with curriculum experts, ESD specialists, and education practitioners. The development results show that the curriculum structure consists of 32 lesson hours, divided into 12 theoretical lesson hours and 20 practical lesson hours, covering four main competency domains: knowledge, pedagogical skills, behavior/attitude, and self-actualization. The FGD results confirm that this curriculum meets the principles of coherence, relevance, and feasibility, emphasizing the importance of practice-based training and collaboration. The discussion revealed that a transformative, contextual, and reflective training approach is needed to bridge the gap between teachers’ conceptual understanding and practical skills in ESD. In conclusion, this curriculum has the potential to empower junior high school teachers as agents of change in supporting the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 4).
