- Abstract
This paper examines the causal effect and heterogeneity of the Belt and Road Initiative on the total factor productivity (TFP) of Chinese enterprises from a holistic perspective by using the data of 2,862 listed companies in Shanghai and Shenzhen A-shares during the period of 2010-2017 as a sample, and the Belt and Road Initiative as a quasi-natural experiment using the double-difference-in-differences (DID) method. The study finds that: (1) the Belt and Road Initiative can effectively improve the total factor productivity of Chinese enterprises; (2) the enhancement effect of the Belt and Road Initiative shows significant heterogeneity, with state-owned enterprises, enterprises in eastern China, and high-tech enterprises obtaining a larger TFP enhancement from the Initiative, but it does not have an obvious moderating effect on the size of the enterprises; and the study suggests that the Belt and Road Initiative is conducive to The study shows that the “Belt and Road” initiative is conducive to promoting enterprises to fully utilize their own resource endowments, effectively allocate domestic and foreign high-quality resources, and stimulate the innovation vitality and potential of enterprises, which, on this basis, will play a stronger role in boosting the high-quality development of Chinese enterprises. Thus, the Belt and Road Initiative can also become one of the important driving forces for the Chinese government to implement and guide the development of enterprises.
