- Abstract
This study conducts a systematic review of phonetic errors among Chinese “English as a Foreign Language” (EFL) learners, synthesizing findings from CSSCI-indexed journal articles published between 2000 and 2024. It categorizes the types, distribution, and causes of segmental and suprasegmental errors in learners’ spoken English. The findings reveal that substitution errors are the most frequent type of segmental errors, with consonant errors outweighing vowel errors. Suprasegmental errors predominantly manifest in word stress, intonation, and sentence rhythm, and these errors exert a more significant impact on oral communication compared to segmental errors. Chinese EFL learners’ English pronunciation is mostly negatively influenced by their native Mandarin phonological patterns. The study recommends enhancing segmental practice and prioritizing suprasegmental feature instruction to improve Chinese EFL learners’ pronunciation and teaching quality.
