Abstract

The extent and amount of social studies material requires teachers to be creative and innovative in the learning process that is lively and dynamic. Social studies teachers must be able to change the paradigm that social studies lessons are only stories that is not interesting, and boring. Learning media must be created in order to make learning process is more interesting, interactive. Student motivation and attention can be improved (students centered) through the mind mapping as a note-taking technique to master learning material that highlights student’s creativity. This study aims to: 1) describe the use of mind mapping learning media for social studies learning in grade VIII of public junior high school-Sekolah Menengah Pertama (SMP) Negeri 1 South Siberut Mentawai, 2) find out the obstacles faced by teachers when applying mind mapping learning media in social studies subjects. This research is qualitative research as a research procedure that produces descrip- tive data. Based on the facts in the field, it was found that the use of mind mapping in the learning process of social studies in grade VIII of Public junior high school No. 1 South Siberut Mentawai by using mind mapping. Social studies learning process became more interesting and students enthusiast in learning. The research result shows that the student’s mind mapping learning media innovation is still very simple and the teachers in schools are not accustomed to use of learning media because the learning process is conventi-onal.
