Abstract

The present study aims to analyze the green initiatives taken by the university libraries of Assam, how they contribute towards sustainable development, what are the challenges faced by the library professionals to adopt green practices, and what is the role of government in this case. A survey is carried out by taking five university libraries as sample. Further, to what extent the libraries are contributing towards sustainable development is also analyzed in the study. Green library is a new phenomenon. With the growing awareness towards sustainability, libraries have also started contributing towards it, and hence, they start making green buildings, use eco-friendly materials, and also try to spread awareness regarding sustainability. A critical discussion has been done through the present research and it comes with the outcome that though the surveyed libraries have adopted some sustainable measures, but there is a long way to go to call them as ideal green libraries. The libraries must work as a torchbearer to make people aware about the need of adopting sustainable practices. Energy efficiency, water preservation, waste management, air purification-all such matters are discussed. Further, the study intends to suggest a collaboration of government and other institutions in the global scenario to push forward the concept of green library.
