Abstract

This study examines the impact of Construction 4.0 (C4.0) technologies on the sustainable performance of construction firms in Vietnam, with a particular focus on the post-adoption phase. Rapid urbanisation in developing economies has intensified sustainability challenges within the construction sector, necessitating the adoption of advanced digital technologies. Drawing on Diffusion of Innovation theory and Socio-Technical Systems theory, this study investigates how the five C4.0 adoption attributes (relative advantage, compatibility, trialability, observability, and complexity) affect sustainable performance across economic, social, and environmental dimensions. Survey data were collected from 215 executives of Vietnamese construction firms. Structural equation modelling results indicate that all five attributes positively influence sustainable performance. In addition, compatibility, trialability, observability, and complexity significantly mediate the relationship between relative advantage and sustainability outcomes. The findings provide evidence from businesses on how C4.0 spreads after adoption in a developing country, and highlight the need to match digital innovation with social and technical conditions to improve sustainability. The study also shows how C4.0 technologies can help optimise workflows, use resources more efficiently, manage energy, and promote socially responsible practices, and offers valuable insights for construction companies and policymakers who want to promote sustainable development in emerging economies.
