- Abstract
This study examines the critical success factors influencing the implementation of smart food safety management systems (SFSMS) and their effects on firm economic performance. Grounded in the Resource-Based View and Stakeholder Theory, it analyzes how internal and external factors shape SFSMS adoption and business outcomes. Using data from 243 Asian food exporting firms, structural equation modeling was applied to test the proposed relationships. The results show that critical success factors significantly affect both SFSMS implementation and firm performance, while SFSMS implementation itself does not directly enhance economic performance. BRC-certified firms adopt more systematic and policy-driven approaches, whereas non-certified firms rely on flexible financial, technological, and external support strategies. Both groups emphasize the role of NGOs, highlighting the importance of internal capacity building and external collaboration.
