Abstract

University is the source and stock of science and technology expertise. Besides, there is a need of university technology transfer to society (Todling, 2006). Statistically, only 10 from 100 research ideas are continued into research project, and only 2 from those 10 has commercialization potential, ended with only 1 of those 2 successfully commercialized (Parker and Minelli, 2001 in Nasution et al, 2009). The facts above leads to the curiosity of the research commersialisation in Indonesian university. The study will explore the commercialization technology in Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) since it is the oldest technical university in Indonesia that can be assumed ITB relatively has productivity in producing science and technology invention. Moreover, currently ITB sets direction towards entrepreneurial university (Kadarsah, 2014) which means ITB will employ more efforts in the technology Commersialisation. The step of commercializing technology in the conventional model is related with the role of TCO. Therefore, the research will specifically address the role of Technology Commersialisation Office (TCO) in ITB as central research question. Case study was used in this study as a research method to observe the role of TCO in higher education. The data collections were mainly conducted through interviews with key persons in TCO ITB also academic staff and students. The result show ITB has already established technology commersialisation office namely LPIK. The organisation structure of LPIK is directly under university vice president of research and innovation which reflect the urgency of LPIK as university TCO to foster innovation commersialisation. The socialisation program of LPIK is frequently implemented however the database of ITB property right is poor. Moreover, the engagement with the faculty member to attract the willingness of researcher to submit the invention through LPIK is under questioned. Therefore, for future research, or for the continuation of this research, the engagement of faculty member with LPIK should be studied.
