- Abstract
Numerous studies have focused on the relationship between top management teams (TMTs) and corporate innovation performance in China, but whether TMTs heterogeneity can promote innovation has not been consistently concluded. To explain the inconsistency of the empirical results and to reconcile the relevant theoretical contradictions, we conducted a meta-analysis of the effects of TMTs heterogeneity on innovation performance in China and explored potential moderators of the relationship between TMTs heterogeneity and corporate innovation. Based on 51 effect sizes from 21 studies, we find that heterogeneity in functional and educational backgrounds can significantly contribute to innovation performance. The findings of the paper not only help to understand the inconsistent relationship between TMTs heterogeneity and innovation performance, but also help Chinese enterprises in the context of economic transition to promote corporate innovation by improving the composition characteristics of TMTs.
