Abstract

The growingly wide use of hospital homepages extends patient resources locally and internationally. This study, adopting the socio-semiotic multimodal approach (Kress, 2010; Bezemer & Kress, 2016), examines the multimodal features of two hospital homepages which were collected from University College London Hospitals (UCLH) in London, the UK and Nanfang Hospital (NH) in Guangzhou, China. The study reveals how different modes are exploited in the construction of hospital homepages and how mode applications are influenced by professional practices and socio-cultural constraints.
