Abstract

As the only known women-specific writing system within the entire Chinese character dialectal framework, Jiangyong “Nüshu” carries unique cultural value and gendered significance. However, it now faces a profound inheritance crisis under the compounded pressures of character standardization, digital media dissemination, and the globalization of language and script. From the perspective of “linguistic ecology”, this paper investigates the current state of “Jiangyong Nüshu”’s survival and its transmission challenges within the broader context of Chinese character culture. Through this lens, the study reveals a range of deep-rooted issues in the dissemination of “Nüshu”, including deviations from authentic writing norms, value dislocation, and cultural discontinuity. In response, the paper proposes a multidimensional protection strategy, encompassing ecological preservation of linguistic culture, digital restoration, value reconstitution, integration into education, and international communication. These approaches aim to construct an innovative and dynamic inheritance mechanism situated within a healthy linguistic ecosystem, offering insights for the safeguarding of “Nüshu” and promoting the diversity of Chinese character culture.
