Abstract

This writing is entitled “The variation of English Verb Phrases in English Cookbook”. The discussion is focused on the variation of English verb phrases in Cookbook. The variation of verb phrases here is some complements that follow a verb. The data used in this study is taken from English cookbook entitled “The Essential Book of Sauces & Dressings” written by Murdoch Books and published by Periplus, Singapore. The main theory is adopted from the book “The linguistic structure of Modern English” by Brinton (2010) about the theory of verb phrases. The methods that are used to collect data are documentation and observation. The finding of the analysis shows that there are some variations of English verb phrases occur in Cookbooks, those are VP??'V NP; VP??'V NP PP; VP??'V AP; VP??'V NP AP; VP??'V PP; VP??'V PP PP; VP??'V AP PP; VP??'V NP AP PP; VP??'V NP PP PP; VP??' perfect aux V; VP??'passive be V PP; VP??' modal passive be V PP; VP??' passive be V PP PP; VP??' modal passive be V AP; VP??' passive be V AP PP; VP??' modal aux V NP; VP??'modalaux V NP NP.
