- Abstract
The Palu River, which flows through the urban area of Palu City, Central Sulawesi, experiences complex morphological dynamics influenced by hydrological factors, human activities, and extreme events such as earthquakes and liquefaction. A crucial aspect of managing this river is understanding the bedload transport process, which contributes to erosion, sedimentation, and river flow changes. This research aims to estimate the bedload transport rate in the Palu River by analyzing the relationship between water discharge and sediment load. The methodology includes collecting flow data, sediment data, and regression analysis to determine relationships between variables. The research results show a relationship between river discharge and bedload sediment transport rate. During periods of heavy rainfall or flooding, the flow velocity of the Palu River increases, thereby enhancing its sediment transport capacity. Conversely, when the discharge decreases, the flow of the Palu River slows down, causing sediment to settle more easily on the riverbed. This study also offers significant educational value, serving as a useful teaching resource for courses in hydrology, fluvial geomorphology, and sediment transport. The direct measurement techniques, such as velocity–area discharge estimation and Helley-Smith bedload sampling provide real field examples that enrich student learning, practicum activities, and case-based discussions in civil engineering curricula. Moreover, the findings support the development of student competencies in data interpretation, environmental analysis, and watershed management. The conclusions of this study provide important information for river conservation planning and flood risk management and support decision-making in the sustainable management of water resources.
