Abstract

This study aims to explore the experiences of pre-service teachers in developing their reflective practices and professional identity after participating in the Kampus Mengajar program. The research design is categorized as qualitative research with a narrative approach. This study was conducted at Tadulako University, Indonesia, involving four pre-service teachers as participants. The research data were collected through semi-structured interviews, guided reflective journals, and documentation. The results of this study illustrating the experiental learning theory by Kolb’s theory (2015), which created four main themes for this study, namely concrete learning experience, reflection, self-conceptualization, challenges and opportunities. The Kampus Mengajar program was perceived as an valuable and tranformative that allowed pre-service teachers to engage directly with real classroom contexts while also collaborate with peers and school communities. The pre-service teachers developed their reflective practices through the challenges they encountered in the field, including managing student behavior, adapting teaching methods and reflecting critically on their professional growth. Moreover, the pre-service teachers experienced a gradual transition in their identity from pre-service teachers to novice teachers, marked by increased confidence in conceptualizing their professional identity and heightened self-awereness in decision-making. The process of learning by doing enabled them to understand not only how to teach but also who they were becoming as educators. It can be interpreted by the results that the pre-service teachers experience in the Kampus Mengajar program had a significant impact particularly in shaping their perceptions, reflective practices, and identity development.
