Proceedings of the International Conference on Language Politeness (ICLP 2020)

The International Conference of Language Politeness 2020 (ICLP 2020) is held to project various thoughts about language politeness in the context of knowledge-based Society 5.0.

Language becomes a direct link between speech actors, writers and readers, between government and ordinary people. Simplification of the potentials of language to maintain the intensity of interaction so that ideas, messages, or moral language can be conveyed and understood. Language politeness becomes a personal responsibility, a personal mirror, being a "pathos" of the interconnected parties.

Currently, digital technology has displaced the existence of humans as the language and culture producers. Globalization has changed the face and cultural posture in such a way that it affects the language sovereignty of each country toward the horizontal. Unique and diverse language and cultural tastes are confronted with cultural globally that puts forward individualistic values in its new form. The handling of culture and language as guardians and markers of a large framework of national culture, is acknowledged to be less than optimal resulting in chaos in attitudes, forms, and distortions of languages and cultural shock.

In order to realize the issues mentioned above, the Javanalogy of Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) has organised the first International Conference of Language Politeness 2020. The theme of the ICLP 2020 is “Language Politeness: Millennial Generation in the New Normal Era." This general theme is intended to accommodate various interests and expertise within the field of linguistic and culture. The keynote speakers, plenary session, presentations and discussions in ICLP 2020 are hoped to give all participants opportunities to witness that language politeness do play an important role in social development. This is an appropriate effort and great potential to contribute to the discourse of current knowledge in the field of linguistic and cultural studies.
