Abstract

The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into literacy instruction has introduced new opportunities to strengthen creative writing skills in primary education. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of the Creative Culture Writing approach, an AI-assisted creative writing model grounded in Malay cultural heritage in improving students’ creativity and cultural literacy. The research employed a mixed-methods design, involving 54 fifth-grade students from two elementary schools in Riau Province. The intervention was implemented through four learning stages: (1) cultural exploration using Malay pantun, folklore, and local heritage icons; (2) AI-assisted ideation and vocabulary enrichment; (3) story development and visualization; and (4) cultural reflection and peer feedback. Quantitative data were collected using a creative writing rubric (fluency, originality, cultural relevance, and coherence), while qualitative data were obtained through student reflections and teacher observations. The results showed a significant improvement in students’ creative expression and narrative elaboration, alongside a stronger sense of cultural attachment in their writing. Students reported higher motivation and confidence, and teachers highlighted AI as an effective scaffold rather than a replacement for human creativity. The study concludes that combining AI with Malay cultural elements offers a meaningful, identity-based literacy approach that enhances both creativity and cultural awareness in primary school students.
