Abstract

Quality education is highly influenced by the role of teachers as a key component in the success of learning, especially in developing 21st-century skills such as critical thinking skills. This study aims to analyze the optimization of the multi-roles of teachers in improving the learning achievement and critical thinking skills of elementary school students through a descriptive qualitative approach based on the observation of School Introduction Field Practice (PLP) activities. Data collection methods were carried out through non-participant observation and document triangulation in the form of teacher learning tools. Observation results showed that teachers successfully optimized their role as facilitators through the utilization of print media in the form of novels, fiction, and non-fiction books, which were proven to increase the active involvement of students. In addition, the role as motivator and mentor was seen through personal assistance to overcome the constraints of differences in students’ literacy levels, while the role of evaluator was realized through the provision of reasoning-based feedback during book discussions. These findings affirm that the integration of multi-roles of teachers, supported by an understanding of student characteristics, is able to create a conducive learning environment and have an impact on increasing motivation, critical thinking skills, and learning achievement sustainably.
