- Abstract
With the rapid development of information technology, the impact of online teaching on student engagement has garnered significant attention. However, few studies have explored the influence of mirror facial self-observation on learning engagement. Based on literature related to student engagement and self-absorption, this study constructs relevant research hypotheses and designs two studies to test these hypotheses: Study 1, based on field data, and Study 2, based on experimental data. The findings reveal that, compared to the absence of mirror facial self-observation, its presence during online teaching enhances student engagement. Public self-absorption mediates the relationship between mirror facial self-observation and student engagement, and this mediating effect is moderated by narcissism. The conclusions of this study enrich the understanding of factors influencing student engagement and contribute to impression management theory. Additionally, the findings offer practical implications for teachers in designing effective strategies to stimulate student engagement in online teaching contexts.
