Abstract

The purpose of the study was to explore the influence of corporate governance practices on the performance of educational institutions. The study was underpinned by resource dependence, agency and stakeholders’ theories. The study adopted a doctrinal and statutory research method to examine the existing management literature. The units of examination and analysis were transparency, Boards, Chief Executive Officers’ (CEOs) attributes and the control environment. The study findings revealed that corporate governance practices affect the performance of educational institutions in emerging economies. The study recommended systemic reforms to enhance institutional governance and operational effectiveness, adoption of holistic governance structures, including the creation of independent entities devoid of government or sponsor interference, implementation of robust accountability measures, transparency, control, communication strategy, specialization anchored on qualified personnel, and stakeholder involvement in decision-making processes. The result of this study is also intended to provide valuable insights for practitioners and researchers in the field of corporate governance. Additionally, it is intended to provide a foundation for future investigations focusing on the governance of low- and middle-level educational institutions in developing countries.
